When my friends and I planned our 2024 trip to Asheville, North Carolina, we were excited to explore the vibrant arts scene, savor local cuisine, and hike the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains. We anticipated long hikes, brewery visits, and evenings filled with laughter. Little did we know that our adventure would take a dramatic turn with the arrival of Hurricane Helene, transforming our fun getaway into an extraordinary experience of resilience, community, and friendship.

The Aftermath
Community Spirit
Reflections

As we returned home, we felt our bond was stronger than ever, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead together. Asheville residents showed us community strength, what it looks to support one another, and to celebrate resilience. Our trip to Asheville will forever remain etched in our hearts as a testament to the power of friendship and the incredible spirit of community.
We stand with our friends living in NC who lost so much. We shared here almost nothing of the horrific and tragic losses experienced in NC. We chose not to photograph the people we saw covered head to toe in mud, paralized with shock. We did not share the insensitive messages from our would be AirbNb host who after much pleading, refused to cancel and refund our reservation only to cancel on us when we had no other place to go. We did not share the calls from our loved ones that thought we could've perished because we where completely cut off from any communications and had no idea where we were for an extended period. Still , we are the lucky ones. We found a hotel that regardless of their lack of water, electric, food or communications, took us in and cared for us until aiports re-opened.
